Honorable Carolyn Engel Temin to Receive Beccaria Award 11-13-2007
The Justinian Society of Philadelphia and The Criminal Justice Section of the Philadelphia Bar Association will recognized the Honorable Carolyn Engel Temin of The First Judicial District of Pennsylvania, Court of Common Pleas with the 14th Annual Beccaria Award.

About the Beccaria Award
The Beccaria Award is presented annually by the Justinian Society and the Criminal Justice Section of the Philadelphia Bar Association to a legal jurist, scholar or practitioner for outstanding contributions to the cause of justice and the advancement of legal education. Beccaria was an 18th century Italian scholar whose writings presaged the dawn of the modern penal system. This year's award recognizes Judge Temin's distinguished achievements in the field of criminal justice.
About Judge Carolyn Engel Temin
Judge Carolyn Temin presides over the Court of Common Pleas of Philadelphia County. She was initially elected to a ten-year term in 1984 and was retained for a second term beginning in 1994. She has served in the Homicide Division of the Court of Common Pleas from 1991 to the present and, since 1994, has served as the Homicide Calendar Judge, bearing the responsibility of scheduling the entire homicide docket. Judge Temin has been appointed to several committees by the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania and the Administrative Judge of the Trial Division of the Philadelphia Court of Common Pleas. Of those committees, she chairs the Trial Division Education Committee and co-chairs the Jury Selection Strategic Plan Committee. As Education Chairman, she organizes the special new judges' orientation program and other educational programs.
Judge Temin also actively participates in numerous other judicial activities. She is a current member and past president of the Pennsylvania Conference of State Trial Judges. As a member of the National Association of Women Judges, Judge Temin served a two-year term as District Director and co-chair of the Annual Conference of the association. She is a delegate to the Judicial Administration Division of the American Bar Association and is currently completing a three-year term on the Executive Committee of the National Conference of State Trial Judges. She has lectured on a wide variety of topics, including sentencing, criminal law, women in prison, and sexual and domestic violence.
Prior to accepting her tenure as judge, Judge Temin's experience included positions as assistant district attorney of Philadelphia County for seven years and assistant defender with the Defender Association of Philadelphia for six years. She earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree from the University of Pennsylvania in 1955 and a law degree from the University of Pennsylvania in 1958.
